How do I deprime with a hand depriming tool?

Frankford Arsenal Hand Depriming Tool

Hand depriming tools

Using a hand depriming tool to deprime ammunition (i.e., remove the spent primer) is a fairly straightforward process and one of the first skills you’ll pick up when getting started in reloading, although it does require care to ensure safety.

Here's a general procedure:

  1. Get Equipped: Purchase a hand-depriming tool from a reliable brand, and make sure you have a safe and clean workspace to perform this task. Always remember to wear safety glasses when working with ammunition.
  2. Secure the Shell Holder: The tool should have a shell holder. This is where the cartridge will sit while the primer is being removed. Place the cartridge case in the shell holder.
  3. Align the Cartridge: Make sure the primer end of the cartridge is facing the pin on the hand-depriming tool. This pin will punch out the old primer.
  4. Push the Pin: Slowly and carefully apply pressure to the handle of the depriming tool. This will push the pin into the primer pocket and pop out the primer.
  5. Inspect the Cartridge: Check the cartridge to make sure that the primer has been successfully removed. The primer pocket should be empty.
  6. Remove the Cartridge: Once the primer has been successfully removed, you can take the cartridge out of the shell holder.

Remember, safety is paramount. Always wear protective glasses, and never attempt to deprime live rounds. Once your brass is deprimed, the next step is usually cleaning and brass trimming. This process is intended for spent cartridges only.

Also, be aware that some states or regions may have laws about handling ammunition, spent cartridges, or primers, so ensure you're following all local regulations.

Lastly, this process may vary somewhat depending on the specific hand depriming tool you’re using. For an alternative approach, consider using a universal decap die on your press, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific tool.
